iPhone: the most-asked question, answered first
Since most of our readers land on this page asking specifically about iPhone, let's start there. Every iPhone from the XS and XR onward supports eSIM — that includes the iPhone 17 lineup, iPhone 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, and 11 series.
One important exception: iPhones sold in mainland China or Hong Kong do not have eSIM hardware — Apple ships those models with a dual physical-SIM tray instead. If you bought your iPhone in China or Hong Kong, or secondhand from someone who did, this applies to you regardless of the phone's age.
Quickest way to check any iPhone: dial *#06# on the keypad. If a line labeled EID appears, your iPhone supports eSIM. You can also go to Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM — if that option exists, you're set.
Samsung Galaxy
Galaxy S20 and newer (S20, S21, S22, S23, S24, S25 series), the Z Fold and Z Flip lines from the Z Fold 2 / Z Flip 3 onward, and the A53/A54/A55 5G models all support eSIM. Units sold in South Korea and China are sometimes the exception — worth checking with *#06# if you bought outside your home region.
Google Pixel
Every Pixel since the Pixel 3 (2018) supports eSIM — that's the whole current lineup, no exceptions worth noting.
Xiaomi and other Android brands
Xiaomi is selective: the 13 and 14 series (including 13T Pro, 14T, 14T Pro) support it, but the budget Redmi and POCO lines generally don't. OnePlus 11 and 12 (global versions) support eSIM. Huawei has the hardware on several models (P40 Pro, P50 Pro, Mate 40 Pro), but software and regional restrictions can affect whether it actually works — check with support if you're unsure.
Four reasons eSIM might not work even on a supported phone
Carrier lock. Phones bought on an installment plan or subsidized by a carrier sometimes reject eSIM profiles from other providers. Check under Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock — “No SIM restrictions” means you're clear.
A China-market device. As above — this is a hardware limitation, not something a software update can fix.
Outdated OS. Some early eSIM-capable phones need the latest iOS or Android version installed before the feature works properly.
A profile slot already in use. Most phones store several eSIM profiles but only run one at a time — delete an old one if you're not using it.

Yes. Any iPhone 12 sold through official channels outside mainland China or Hong Kong supports eSIM.

Yes, most Redmi Note models don't include eSIM hardware. You'd need a physical SIM for that device.
